Happy Record Store Day 2016!

Popular demand for vinyl LP records has soared to such heights that there is an entire day dedicated to it. Today marks the ninth anniversary of a day which celebrates the revival of the music medium once thought to be extinct.

The expansive demand for vinyl is an international phenomenon.  Today, “there are Record Store Day participating stores on every continent except Antarctica.”
This event is a Big Deal for independent record store owners and employees. Today, the music media market is dominated by the small fry, the little guy, and the underdog.

According to the official website, many major US cities—New York City, Los Angeles, Boise, Charleston and Las Vegas—have declared Record Store Day an official holiday.

Record Store Day embraces the Authenticity Factor in the same way the vinyl experience does: it’s physical, real, imperfect, and visceral. In fact, there are very stringent guidelines on the stores that can participate in this historic day:

A Record Store Day participating store is defined as a standalone brick and mortar retailer whose main primary business focuses on a physical store location, whose product line consists of at least 50% music retail, whose company is not publicly traded and whose ownership is at least 70% located in the state of operation.  (In other words, we’re dealing with real, live, physical, indie record stores—not online retailers or corporate behemoths).

This narrow definition certainly weeds out big box retailers, wholesalers, eCommerce sites, and any other competition that could squash these small, independent businesses. As such, the day has grown to include exclusive LP releases to draw in bigger crowds and greater interest.

But, more than the physical connection to vinyl, it’s about the emotional connection. The distinct appeal of record stores is not what goodies you found or purchased, but the possibilities of what hidden musical treasures you might find.
